How to install a Moodle theme
In this Moodle tutorial, we will install a brand new free theme in our Moodle installation. You can follow below step-by-step or else, if you prefer to watch a video – scroll to the bottom.
Step 1: Go to moodle.org’s download section – themes link
Step 2: Select a theme – make sure you selected theme supports your Moodle version

Step 3: Click on the specific version number you want to download – then read through all the description – optionally, also see the website URL (to see live/demo theme in action)
Step 4: Click the green “download” button for the theme you have selected.
Step 5: Extract the compressed file – and place the folder you find inside – to a special location. The special location is

Step 6: Note: at this location, you can also see the default themes that ship with Moodle – for example, “Clean” and “More”.
Step 7: Log in to Moodle in an Administrator account.
Step 8: Traverse to “Site Administration > Notifications page”. This page will recognize that you have added a new theme – if you have placed the new directory in the correct location.
- NOTE: If you had done something accidentally, there is a button to “Cancel this installation” also.
Step 9: Click on the “
Upgrade Moodle Database now” button. Wait for a moment for the script to install the theme automatically.
Step 10: You will get a “
success” message. Click on the “
Step 11: You will then be led to the theme configuration screen – and how this will look will depend on the particular theme you have installed. You are not done yet.
Step 12: Traverse to “Site Administration > Appearance > Themes > Theme Selector”. Use the “Change theme” button – and select the new theme you have installed and activate it. That’s it – you will instantly see the new theme in action.
