Technique 1: Moodle’s OFFICIAL Demo site – Mount Orange School
This is Moodle’s official demo site – this will always showcase the latest stable Moodle build. On this demo site you can explore Moodle in action in any of the multiple roles that have been configured – as a manager, teacher, student, or parent.
The good news is that you can play and try out features to your heart’s content – without the fear of breaking anything – as the whole site gets reset every 1 hour.
Another official Moodle demo (sandbox) site – which always uses the the latest stable version of Moodle using the default theme shipped with Moodle.
On this demo site also, you can login with any of the multiple roles configured – admin / manager / teacher / student /.
Moodle hosting from the people that make Moodle – that’s the tagline – and it explains everything.
You can get FREE hosting with a single class limitation. If you want to run multiple classes – there are different paid options available.
The free option is good to try out Moodle quickly.
See my earlier post on how you can do a complete, clean install of Moodle on any Windows machine.
In this post, I show how you can install the full tech stack needed to run Moodle – Apache, PHP and MySQL.
There are 2 advantages to doing a clean install – as opposed to using a WAMP / XAMP installer. Firstly, the clean install is a closer match to the actual environment you will see on the production server – and so you will be able to test and debug very similar to the LIVE installation. Secondly, you can use the same framework very easily for other platforms to play with – for example, you can install WordPress with minimal effort using the same setup.
There are several resources on this site (both for learning and teaching) – well worth exploring.
